Antique BARADELLE Sundial, circa 1782


Offered for sale is the very rare Antique Baradelle, Paris, Brass Compass Pocket Universal Sundial which is believed to be circa 1782. A search of is of assistance as there is very little genealogy on a BARADELLE of Paris, France as an instrument maker. A search of the British Horlogical Institute Limited ( #1260) makes limited reference to an instrument maker from Paris France from the 1780's. In the book entitled Scientific Instruments of the 17th & 18th Centuries and their Makers by Maurice Daumas (Portman Books, London Publication 1972, at pages 98 et.sec. refers to..."In1782 the mirror and spectacle-makers guild confiscated various optical instruments and tools from Bradelle's workshop. Bardelle, who had the title of engineer in mathematical instruments, was a master founder..."

Description. This outstanding antique brass Pocket universal Sundial is octagon sided (8 sided) and lever, measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/2" and has the 'BIRD" sundial hinged sundial just like the original Butterfield dials. There is a compass inserted in the bottom 9see photo). There is engraved in Roman Numerals (III to XII and I to VIII. inside that engraving are the roman numerals (V to XII and I to VII). On the very outside are the numbers 1-12 and 1-9 which are divided by half hours. Along the inside of the face plate are the degrees 40 and 40 set around the engraving "Baradelle Paris. on the hinged 'BIRD" sundial is the engraved scale from 40-50-60.

On the reverse is engraved with the principle cities around Europe including the latitude settings for each. The principal cities and their latitudes are: Paris 48-51; Aniems 49-54; Rouen 49-8; Chartres 48-26; Dreppe 49-57; Dijon 47-20; Tours 47-26; Turin 44-50; Lyon 45-45; Bordeaux 44-11; Grenoble 45-11; Bayonne v43-30; Montpellier 43-36; Toulin 43-5; Madrid 40-26; Rome 44-50; Aix 43-33; Grand 51-3; Utreck 52-8; Berlin 52-33; Drest 51-10; Leide 52-10; Premier; Cadran; Leide; Gand 51-3.
